The water-soluble vitamin that constitutes folate (vitamin B9) is important as it acts in favor of the synthesis of DNA which regulates cell division. In the case of rapid growth, and therefore in particular at the beginning of pregnancy, the need for folic acid increases. In general, moreover, this vitamin participates in the biosynthesis of many substances useful for health.

A folic acid deficiency occurs in women mainly in the form of anemia and an increase in homocysteine levels in the blood.
